Young Guns Ready to Fire in 2006
By: Mack Rosenberg
Edited by Keith Dobkowski

Here are 6 young guns ready to light it up on the mound in 2006:

Dontrelle Willis, Marlins Dontrelle had one for the ages last
year, winning 22 games ad falling just short of winning the Cy
Young (Chris Carpenter of St. Louis won). This year may be a very
different story for the D-Train. The Marlins have dumped payroll,
getting rid of almost every one of their opening day starters from
last season. Dealing with the mess will be new manager and
former Yankees catcher, Joe Girardi.  Girardi has his work cut out
in 2006, yet will enter the season in the enviable position of
having a number one starter.  D-Train has lived up to the hype,
winning the Rookie of the Year in 2004.  In 2005, he ignored the
critics who said he would tire in the second half because of the
high leg kick and went on to win 22.  And it is clear that 2006 will
be D-Trains biggest test as he is now the staff ace and arguably
the team's best player. Dontrelle has the talent, but will he have
the team to back it up.

Rich Harden, Athletics Harden had a solid season last year,
finishing 10-5 and holding opponents to just a .201 batting
average. Add in an ERA of 2.53 and Harden is clearly one of
Baseball's Young Studs.

Zach Duke, Pirates Maybe still a year away, Duke is the young
gun on everyone's surprise pick to win the 2006 wildcard.  In
2005, Duke won his first six decisions in the majors and finished
with a 1.81 ERA. Incredibly, he’s only 22 years old.  Duke held left-
handed batters  to a .146 average and gave up just 3 home runs
in 2005.

Scott Kazmir, Devil Rays Kazmir, being one of the most
underrated pitchers in all of baseball last year, ranked fourth in
the American league in strikeouts with 174. In an interview with
ESPN.com, eventual hall of fame second baseman Roberto Alomar
said of facing Kazmir in a batting practice session, "I've never
seen a young left-hander who throws that hard, and his ball
moves that much." It’s seems like nothing but good stuff for
Kazmir coming into 2006.

Felix Hernandez, Mariners  As a rookie last year, Hernandez
went 4-4 yet his ERA was 2.67 for a terrible Seattle team.  With
Adrian Beltre and Ichiru Suzuki both focused on righting their
plate woes from 2005, Hernandez should see a huge boost in run
support.  With the natural talent that has all scouts foaming at
the mouth, Hernandez is set to have a huge year in 2006.

Matt Cain, Giants Cain held batters to a .151 average during his
short stretch with the Giants in 2005. Getting called up just five
weeks before the season ended, Cain finished the season with a
2-1 record and 2.33 earned run average in 7 starts. As the
Giants' top pick from a few years ago, Cain's proved to the fans
that he was well worth the wait.  At just 21 years old, the future
and the present seem very bright for the Cain and the Giants.
