Super Bowl Bound
By: Keith Dobkowski, NFL News Writer
January 24, 2005

They were the two best teams at the beginning of the season
and now they are headed to Jacksonville to face one another in
the Super Bowl.  The Philadelphia Eagles were clearly the class of
the NFC and the New England Patriots, though challenged on
paper by the Indianapolis Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers, are the
champs for a reason.

So in less than two weeks we will all witness the two best teams
of this millennium face off against one another.  Over the past
four years the Eagles and Pats have reached seven Conference
Championship games and five Super Bowls.  Not too shabby.

Over the coming days several issues will come to the forefront.
Here is the top four…

Issue 1:  WILL TERRELL OWENS PLAY?

This exact question will lead all Super Bowl hype.  As has been
well publicized Owens broke his leg and tore ligaments in his
ankle during the 15th week of the season.  The doctors stated
that Owens might be able to suit up for the Super Bowl if the
Eagles made it that far.  Well, the Eagles are there and Owens
just may play.

Will Owens take the field, make a catch or two and watch the
majority of the game from the sideline?  Or is T.O. just a ploy
being used by Coach Andy Reid to force the Patriots to create two
defensive schemes for the big dance?

T.O. has already announced that he will play and with God on his
side, T.O. is spiritually healed.  Problem is that Owens’ injury is a
ten-week injury in the best case.  The Super Bowl takes place
exactly six weeks after Owens hurt his leg.

From this point of view Owens will be the Eagles Willis Reed.  He
will play sparingly, but give the Eagles the emotional boost
needed for the game.  While Owens cannot be the primary threat,
with his body size and the injuries the Eagles face at tight end,
Owens gives Donovan McNabb a great target over the middle.
Owens will also force some double coverage allowing McNabb
more room to move, Brian Westbrook greater opportunity and
wide receivers Freddie Mitchell and Todd Pinkston the one-on-one
coverage necessary to go deep.

Issue 2:  ARE THE PATRIOTS A DYNASTY?

As the salary cap was supposed to usher in the years of parody,
one team has stood above it all and now looks to win its third
Super Bowl in four seasons.  If the Pats win a week from Sunday
they will join the Dallas Cowboys of the 1990s who won three
Super Bowls in a decade and be just behind the San Francisco
49ers of the 1980s and the Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970s who
both won four Super Bowls.

The view here is that the title of dynasty takes a minimum of
three wins with an important exception.  The Patriots did not even
make the playoffs two seasons ago.  This is something that did
not occur to the other teams listed above.

The Cowboys made the playoffs seven straight years, won three
Super Bowls and lost one NFC Championship game.  The 49ers
made the playoffs 9 straight years not including the strike year.
During that period the Niners won four Super Bowls and lost twice
in the NFC Championship Game.  After posting 10 wins in 1991
and missing the playoffs, the Niners went to the playoffs seven
consecutive times winning the Super Bowl once and losing in the
NFC Championship Game three times.  The Steelers made the
playoffs nine consecutive years, won four Super Bowls, and lost in
the AFC Championship game twice.

On February 6, 2005, the Patriots may hoist the Lombardi Trophy
for the third time in four seasons, but their accomplishments do
not compare with the best teams of the last three decades.

Issue 3:  IS TOM BRADY A HALL OF FAMER?

If Tom Brady wins the Super Bowl and the MVP award, he will join
Joe Montana as the only three-time recipient of the award.  This
by itself should be enough to cement Brady’s name in Canton.

Issue 4:  IS THIS THE LAST YEAR OF THE PATRIOTS?

The well-oiled machine that Pats Coach Bill Belichick has created
will most likely lose two important parts this off-season.  Offensive
Coordinator Charlie Weiss has already accepted the job at Notre
Dame.  And Defensive Coordinator Romeo Crennel is rumored to
be on his way to the Cleveland Browns to replace the fired Butch
Davis.

Belichick has been lucky to have these two by his side for the last
four seasons.  And together they have formed the best coaching
core in the league.  However, it will be determined next season
whether Belichick is as great as most declare.  Is Belichick the Bill
Walsh of the new millennium?  Or is he Mike Shannahan who won
two Super Bowls with John Elway and none since.

It is going to be a wild two weeks.
