The Politics of Sports
By:  Keith Dobkowski

As most sports fans do, I tune into Sportscenter on a nightly,
well morning-ly and afternoon-ly, basis.  I hope to fill my sports
needs with results and numbers.  Like most, I hope my team
wins, my rivals lose, my players stay healthy, my management
makes good moves and my team’s lead grows.

I care about championships.  In basketball I care about jump
shots, fast breaks, foul shots and ball movement.  In football, I
want to see red-zone defense, the running back hit the hole,
and the two-minute drill.  And in baseball, I want to see Barry
Bonds bat.  In fact, Barry just went yard for the second time
tonight against the Expos.  Glad I got to see that.

We derive pleasure from sport due to its scientific simplicity.  As
complex as it is to hit a 95 mile-per-hour fastball over a wall 400
feet away, is the simple thought to swing at a ball with a stick.
For me time stops every time Bonds enters the batters box.  As I
am sure it does for you every time Kobe Bryant takes a shot in L.
A., Brett Favre throws a pass in Wisconsin, and Mariano Rivera
takes the mound in New York.

For those few seconds of getting to watch Barry Bonds, the best
player to ever hit a ball, attempt to hit the ball, I am completely
captivated.  My cares of world peace, the war in Iraq,
homelessness, the economy, the treatment of animals and
children, and even my bills disappear from thought as I root and
root hard.  It is that very pleasure created by sports that should
not be touched by politics.

Hold on a second, Barry has just entered the batter’s box again.
And sadly the Expos just intentionally walked Bonds.  In case
you have not been paying attention, Bonds has more walks than
most teams and more homeruns than strikeouts.  Barry is
baseball history.

To the point, politics and sports need to remain separate.  Yet,
the exact opposite is taking place.  George W. Bush is courting
NASCAR dads, much in the way that Bill Clinton went after soccer
moms (there may be a joke in there somewhere).  Bush not only
said, “start your engines,” but he did a fly-over of the track with
Air Force 1.

John Kerry has tried to court the Latin vote by sharing his soccer
history for he was a collegiate soccer player.  This politicking by
our presidential hopefuls is interrupting the very escape I am
craving.  During the Democrat Convention in Boston a few weeks
back, Kerry spent a day at Fenway Park and threw out the
ceremonial first pitch.

While it was a pathetic attempt to throw a strike, the reason I
know this is due to Sportscenter.  That’s right.  Sportscenter
replayed the highlight of the Kerry first pitch.  Just as
Sportscenter replayed Bush’s “start your engines.”  In fact,
Sportscenter compared the Kerry pitch to a recent first pitch
thrown by Bush.

Now Michael Moore may want to believe that the real reason
behind the comparison that showed Kerry’s ball to Bush’s strike
is a right wing conspiracy.  See, ESPN, the network that
produces Sportscenter, is actually owned by Disney.  Disney
produced Moore’s recent film, “Fahrenheit 9/11,” only to draw
back its support just before the films release.   Which caused the
release date to be changed and a new producer to step in.
Many believe that Disney’s ownership group, who are staunch
Bush supporters, derived Disney’s actions toward Moore.  Clearly
wanting to show greater support of their candidate and to help
the American voters see the link between a candidate who
throws strikes and one who throws balls, Disney ordered ESPN
to run the pitch comparison on Sportscenter.  At least that is
how I understand the conspiracy theory to go and I am sure a
documentary will be released soon.

And then there is my theory that Politicians need to leave our
sports world alone.  When Barry Bonds’ hits a homerun I will slap
you high five regardless of whether you are left wing or right
wing.  As I am sure that Boston Red Sox fans root together and
not based political party.

So to you Mr. Bush, please realize that not all NASCAR Dads are
Republicans.  They are just NASCAR Dads hoping to see a good
race.  And to you Mr. Kerry, not all Latinos play soccer.  They care
about your qualifications not your ball striking ability.

And as should be appropriate with any article, Bonds is back at
the plate.  And he hits a long one to deep centerfield…  Well this
one stayed in the yard.  Still two-for-three with two homeruns
numbers 690 and 691 for his career ain’t bad.  The freedom from
politics was nice too.
