The Conspiracy Theory
By:  Keith Dobkowski, Olympic News Writer

Normally reserved for the NBA Draft, conspiracy theorist should
be pointing their fingers directly at the Iraqi Olympic Soccer Team
and President George W. Bush.

Regardless of where the Iraqi Soccer Team finishes, serious
doubt has to enter the mind of the world’s soccer fans.  There
are several factors at work here and most point at the Bush
Administration’s use of the Iraqi team in its political commercials
for president.

Even the Iraqi soccer players have requested that their team not
be used by Bush reelection campaign.  As Iraqi midfielder Salih
Sadir said, “Iraq as a team does not want Mr. Bush to use us for
the presidential campaign.  He can find another way to advertise
himself.”  Yet the Bush political team has refused to comply and
continue to show the Iraqi soccer success as Bush’s success.

One player even questioned his role on the team and stated that
he would rather be in Iraq fighting against the American
Occupiers.  The grief from the war in their Homeland has made
the Iraqi’s team success an even greater accomplishment.

Or has it?

As we entered the Olympics, several reporters on the ground in
Iraq had stated that fighting between the Iraqis and the
Americans always slowed to a halt during major international
soccer matches.  It appeared that the true strength of sport was
enough to bring the fighting to a close, for at least a few hours.

It becomes reasonable to believe that the Bush Administration
would benefit greatly from a strong run by Iraq’s only Olympic
competing athletes.

International polls show that Bush is disliked and disrespected by
a very large majority of non-Americans.  In the United States,
Bush has seen his approval-rating drop consistently since his
declaration of “Mission Accomplished” in Iraq.  In fact over 50% of
Americans now disagree with Bush’s decision to go to war.

Add in no weapons of mass destruction and the shrinking of the
coalition to where the United States is now footing over 90% of
the bill and providing over 90% of the troops, and President Bush
has dug himself quite a hole.

So in an election year, as Osama Bin Ladin runs free and news
from Iraq shows American Soldiers coming home in body bags,
the Bush Administration has been searching for any good news
related to Iraq.

So what if, and a big what if, the Bush Team could make fighting
subside even if just for a few hours?  Bush could show a free Iraq
and have the World in the palms of his hands cheering on the
Iraqi national soccer team.

What if a few dollars paid to a few Olympic referees could cause
more penalty cards to be placed on an Iraqi opponent with less
applied upon the Iraqi team?

Not enough penalty cards to notice, especially over the global joy
for the success of the war torn country Olympic Team.  But
enough penalty cards to affect the flow and the oppositions best
players.

Imagine stopping the fighting, at least for a few weeks, and to
get to show freedom, the glory of competition and only having to
spend a few thousand dollars to do so.  It does not seem so
unfathomable.

As Iraq weighs heavily upon the American people, costing
hundreds of billions more than what was promised, costing over
1,000 American lives with no end in sight, seeing the coalition of
the willing become the coalition of the few and still lacking those
guaranteed weapons of mass destruction, President George W.
Bush needed a way out.

Iraq winning a medal in the Olympics, something that has not
happened since the 1960’s, could provide that way out for Bush.
The price to line the pockets of a few referees would be small in
comparison the political gain accomplished by Iraqi Soccer
success.
